Three managers across tumultuous campaign

Three managers across tumultuous campaign

Three managers and 37 players figured in an up and down campaign, which concluded on April 26. Here's a look back at the trials and tribulations of 2024/25 for the Romans' men's team...

AUGUST

Injuries and absentees hampered City ahead of an opening day trip to promotion favourites Boreham Wood.

With captain Kieran Parselle forced to drop out due to personal reasons, Ben Morgan, who had barely featured in pre-season, was drafted in as City only had four substitutes to call upon.

Sol Wanjau-Smith, Latrell Humphrey-Ewers, Jordan Tillson and Alex Fisher made their debuts from the off while Louis Sweeten appeared from the bench aged 16 and 337 days to become the club's youngest player in National League South.

Harvey Wiles-Richards and Zac Smith began their second stints.

While Wiles-Richards excelled, only beaten by Tyrone Marsh late on in a 1-0 defeat, Smith was stretchered off in the first half with an ACL injury which ruled him out for the rest of the season. He was replaced by Jordan Alves for his first outing with Ruben Davies making a late cameo having joined on non-contract terms.

A mixed start included wins over Welling and Hampton, an unlucky defeat at home to Torquay where former Roman Cody Cooke netted and a dire goalless draw at Tonbridge Angels.

The month concluded with an action-packed loss at Hemel Hempstead Town where Wiles-Richards saw red alongside Hemel's Brandon Barzey. Joe Raynes had to play for over an hour in goal, conceding three in a 4-2 defeat to leave City 17th at the end of the month.

SEPTEMBER

Wiles-Richards' heroics earned a 1-0 win over eventual champions Truro City before a three-match ban coincided with meek losses at Chelmsford and home to Enfield Town, either side of a 2-1 victory over Merthyr Town in the FA Cup.

That win over the Martyrs set up an all-National League South third qualifying round tie at Salisbury.
