Thais, Cambodians in tit-for-tat moves

- PORAMET TANGSATHAPORN MONGKOL BANGPRAPA

The government has reduced the maximum period of stay for Cambodian citizens travelling into Thailand through overland crossings from 14 days to just seven days, amid a row over a disputed area along the border in Ubon Ratchathani.

The decision, which was first announced on Sunday, comes despite recent efforts by both countries to reduce tensions along the Thai-Cambodian border.

The restrictions do not apply to travellers entering the country by air.

Phnom Penh responded by limiting the period of stay for Thai citizens travelling to Cambodia to just seven days, according to a report by the Khmer Times yesterday, which cited an announcement by Lt Gen Sok Veasna, Director-General of Cambodia's General Department of Immigration.

The move was confirmed by Nikorndej Balankura, the spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, at a press briefing yesterday.

Mr Nikorndej said the ministry has also been informed of Cambodia's response.

"As of now, neither side has provided any indication on how long this policy will remain in effect, stating that adjustments will depend on the situation.

"At this moment, we are unable to give a definitive answer on the matter," he stated.

As a result of the move, Cambodian citizens who have reached the maximum period of stay must leave the country and have their passports re-stamped in order to legally stay in the country.

Thai citizens in a similar situation must also go through the same procedure to legally stay in Cambodia.
