Sihasak to note Thailand's international role at UNGA

New Foreign Affairs Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow is due to give a speech today at the 80th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York, where he will underscore Thailand's role on the global stage while also addressing pressing regional issues, particularly the border situation with Cambodia.

On his first day in office yesterday, Mr Sihasak, who was due to depart for New York last night, told ministry officials that his four-month tenure must deliver "tangible results" in line with Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul's directive.

A central part of the prime minister’s agenda is the easing of tensions along the Thai-Cambodian border, Mr Sihasak said, adding that peace in the frontier areas would benefit both nations.

He then highlighted the value of existing frameworks, including the Thai-Cambodian General Border Committee, saying that they have already produced promising agreements on a sustainable ceasefire and the deployment of demining operations.
