Opposition demands she calls an election

Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra is facing a growing crisis of public trust after an audio clip of her conversation with Cambodian Senate President Hun Sen went viral yesterday. In the clip, she appears to suggest in the context that she is on a different side from the Thai military, sparking fierce criticism.

She has said it was a private conversation during which she referred to the commander. However, in the 9-minute voice clip, a Thai-Khmer interpreter referring to Ms Paetongtarn said: “I do not want Hun Sen to listen to the opposing side, especially since the Second Army Region commander is entirely from the opposition.” The translation continues: “If he listens to him [the commander], I hope he does not feel upset or angry, as that is not our intention.

“He [the commander] just wants to appear cool or impressive. He may say things that are not beneficial to the country. However, what we truly want is to restore peace, just as it was before the border conflicts occurred.” The prime minister said her remarks were part of a negotiation tactic, as she was aware that Hun Sen held negative views of the military commander.

Ms Paetongtarn said the call took place last Sunday. She explained she had been informed by an interpreter that Hun Sen was displeased with Thailand’s commander of the 2nd Army Region, following remarks by the commander.
