Local police have sought court approval to extend the detention of a Cambodian man arrested on Tuesday in Krasang district on suspicion of espionage.

Authorities are continuing a probe into his possible links to a military guard unit reportedly loyal to Cambodian Senate President Hun Sen.

The suspect, identified on his Thai ID as Win Da, 36, was arrested at a house in Ban Khok Sung, a village in tambon Si Phum, where he has been living with his Thai wife, known only as "Joy", and their one-year-old child.

He faces initial charges of illegal firearm possession and unlawful entry into Thailand. However, further scrutiny is underway to determine whether he is connected to Cambodia's elite Bodyguard Headquarters (BHQ), believed to be affiliated with Hun Sen's inner circle.
