Commanders in firing line over abuses

Commanders of army units found to have observed conscripts are liable for disciplinary punishment for looking the other way, Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Praphamchon Wachayarat reiterated yesterday.
Mr Prapham made his remarks while overseeing the conscript selection and recruitment at the Directorate of Joint Communications under the Royal Thai Armed Forces Headquarters in Don Muang district of Bangkok yesterday.
The defence minister said he has discussed with leaders of the armed forces the frequency of incidents involving physical and emotional abuses of conscripts by trainers and high-ranking officers in the military.
Some conscripts complained of being sent to work as servants in the homes of senior officers and enduring mistreatment there.
