Charter rewrite rivals make final appeals

Campaigning for and against approval of a constitutional rewrite intensified yesterday as a coalition of pro-democracy groups called on voters to back the amendment process while opponents rallied in defence of the 2017 charter.

A network of about 80 pro-democracy and human rights organisations issued a joint statement urging voters to approve the referendum, saying it would pave the way for drafting a new constitution through public participation.

The groups argued that the current charter, which was promulgated in 2017, was the product of the 2014 coup and lacked democratic legitimacy.
