Chalermchai resigns, Democrats eye new leader

Mr Chalermchai’s resignation took immediate effect, with deputy party leader Pramual Pongthavaradet appointed interim leader during the transition period.

The move comes amid controversy within the party after four Democrat MPs defied a party resolution to abstain from voting, instead casting their ballots for Bhumjaithai Party leader Anutin Charnvirakul, who was elected Thailand’s 32nd prime minister.

The incident has raised questions about party unity and discipline, with observers saying the leadership change may signal a broader restructuring within the party.

In his resignation letter, submitted on Friday, Mr Chalermchai emphasised the need for “strong and unified leadership” to guide the party forward.
