BMA scrambles to stem tidal seawater flooding in capital

City Hall has moved swiftly to contain seawater flooding in the capital’s Bang Khun Thian district after tidal surges inundated coastal roads and nearby communities for three consecutive days, amid warnings that coastal erosion could be more severe as a result of climate change.

Bangkok governor Chadchart Sittipunt yesterday led an onsite inspection of the Bang Khun Thian-Chai Talay Road, accompanied by his deputy, Wisanu Subsompon, after unusually high tides breached a damaged embankment and sent seawater flowing into residential areas, farmland and onto public roads.

According to city officials, the flooding was most severe near Khlong Sam, where seawater first entered low-lying communities before overflowing from fish ponds onto the road.
