Agencies told to explain Thaksin case

The Office of the Ombudsman has given agencies 30 days to explain the controversial decision allowing former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra to receive medical treatment at Police General Hospital (PGH), instead of remaining in prison.

Somsak Suwansujarit, the chief ombudsman, said yesterday the office is requesting factual and legal clarification about the matter from the Department of Corrections (DoC) and other agencies, adding his office has set a 30-day deadline for the information to be submitted.

He noted that if all parties cooperate and provide the required information promptly, the case could be submitted to the Administrative Court shortly after the 30-day deadline.

Mr Somsak said more discussions will be arranged if required, but agencies do not need to be summoned at present.
