Cardiac arrest victim meets his life-savers

A HEROIC bystander and South East Coast Ambulance Service (SECAmb) crews have been praised for saving a life at a railway station.

Two years ago in October 2023, John Callan arrived at North Camp station to catch a train to Guildford. Despite feeling some chest pains that morning, which was dismissed as a muscle strain, it felt like a normal day to him.

But as he sat down at the platform to wait for his train, he blacked out. Toby Laycock, from Ash Vale, was the only other person on that side of the track and saw John topple face first from the bench onto the platform floor. The bystander sprung into action to save John’s life.

“He saw me go down, called 999 and did what the call handler said,” said John. “He responded immediately and was amazing.”
