Hacks to cut diabetes risks

A new study suggests that combining a Mediterranean-style diet with calorie reduction and regular physical activity can greatly lower the risk of type 2 diabetes

A new study led by researchers at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and collaborators in Spain suggests that combining a Mediterranean-style diet with calorie reduction, regular physical activity, and professional weight-loss support can lower the risk of type 2 diabetes (T2D) by 31%. The findings were published on August 25, 2025, in the Annals of Internal Medicine.

"We're facing a global epidemic of diabetes," said study co-author Frank Hu, Fredrick J. Stare Professor of Nutrition and Epidemiology and Chair of the Department of Nutrition at Harvard Chan School. "Our research provides the highest-level evidence that modest, sustained lifestyle changes could prevent millions of cases worldwide."
