OXFORD City were given a rude awakening to life in the National League as a resurgent Aldershot Town ran riot at an exultant EBB Stadium.

Shots give City a reality check

Tommy Widdrington extended his unbeaten start to his tenure as Shots boss to seven matches, and this was by some distance the Shots’ most impressive home performance in at least a year, illuminated by a stellar twogoal debut from Swiss striker Lorent Tolaj.

Tolaj could have grabbed even more as the hosts showed renewed quality and belief – although Hoops manager Ross Jenkins bemoaned his own side’s defending which contributed to their downfall.

“I’m not happy that we conceded two goals,” was Widdrington’s blunt assessment, but he still enthused: “I’m delighted that we won, and the crowd can go home happy with a performance that was good to watch.

“I’m so so pleased that we’ve put on a performance that has an identity – I want my team to have a proper identity. But there’s no back-patting – they’ve got to do the same next week.”
