Mac bids to follow in Vardy footsteps

NOTTS County hitman Macaulay Langstaff says he wants to be the next Jamie Vardy after scooping the Our Game Player of the Year award.

Mac bids to follow in Vardy footsteps

Signed from Gateshead for a fee of £50,000 in the summer, Langstaff scored 42 times to shatter Tom Keetley’s club-record tally of 39 goals in a season, which had stood for 92 years.

Also smashed was Ricky Miller’s record of 40 goals in a National League season, and the 26-year-old Tynesider capped it all with promotion to the EFL after the Magpies beat Chesterfield in the play-off final at Wembley.

Now Langstaff has set his sights on the Premier League and emulating Non-League’s greatest-ever export.

Released by Sheffield Wednesday as a teenager and forced to rebuild his career in part-time football, Vardy joined Fleetwood from Halifax in 2011 and scored 34 goals in 42 games as the Cod Army won the Conference title.

Like Langstaff, he was named the NGA Player of the Year and collected the award during a star-studded bash at Stamford Bridge.
