FALKLANDS GET SET FOR GAMES

FALKLAND Islands manager Troyd Bowles admits his side’s Island Games bid is a trip into the unknown – six years after they last played at the tournament.

The team, led by Bowles who flies for the islands’ air service, will head to Guernsey for next month’s Island Games via a training camp in West Sussex and Surrey.

Each Falklands-based player is contributing £400 towards the trip, with sponsors and donations making up most of the rest of the cost, along with government grants.

The overall Falklands team will be 73-strong and is expected to be competitive in basketball, archery, shooting, swimming and cycling while Bowles himself has previously competed – and won medals in –golf as well as playing for the football team.

Now Bowles is preparing for a stern test against Ynys Mon, the Shetland Islands and the Isle of Man in Group B from July 9.
