Digha is no longer just a beachside holiday possibility. With improved infrastructure, civic discipline, and a magnificent new temple, it seems well on the way to becoming Bengal's favourite retreat
Digha has long been the quintessential getaway for every Bengali family. When Kolkata’s chaos becomes too much, this seaside retreat offers relief. Its beach sunsets, seafood, and playful waves have fuelled countless vacations and spontaneous escapes. For me, too, Digha holds a bundle of fond childhood memories. Now, there’s an added dimension — a sense of tranquility within the newly inaugurated Jagannath Dham.
After more than a decade, my mother and I returned to Digha for a quick trip. Stepping off the Tamralipta Express, we were welcomed not just by the familiar salty breeze but also by a new sight - the spire of the Jagannath Mandir right beside the station, its flag fluttering like a greeting.
We braced ourselves for the usual ruckus outside the station - overpriced totos and bargaining. But this time, none of it happened. Fares had been standardised. Tourists were allotted totos based on group size. It was a heartening welcome.
