Kerala's Sargaalaya Festival returns this December with global artisans, live crafts, performances, food, and cultural experiences in Iringal

As December returns with its soft winter glow, northern Kerala prepares for a cultural homecoming of sorts—one that has, over the years, grown into a defining moment for artisans, travellers, and craft lovers alike. Iringal, a serene village tucked between a river, a hill, and the sea, is once again set to transform into a lively, buzzing hub of creativity as the Sargaalaya International Arts & Crafts Festival (SIACF) opens its 13th edition. From December 23, 2025, to January 11, 2026, the celebrated Sargaalaya Kerala Arts & Crafts Village will welcome visitors into a world where traditional crafts continue to breathe, evolve, and inspire.

For those who want to experience Kerala beyond its scenic coastlines and houseboat-dotted backwaters, SIACF offers a route straight into the heart of the state's artistic heritage. The atmosphere is festive yet grounded, celebratory yet rooted in the stories and skills that artisans have preserved through generations.

Craft Meets Culture

What makes Sargaalaya special—long before the festival begins—is that it isn't a popup cultural event, but a living crafts village. An initiative of the Department of Tourism, Government of Kerala, and managed by the Uralungal Labour Contract Cooperative Society Ltd., a 100-year-old cooperative, the space supports over a hundred artisans year-round, from master potters and coir weavers to bamboo craftsmen and mural artists, whose studios quietly carry tradition into the present.

During SIACF, this already vibrant space expands dramatically. Over 300 artisans from more than a dozen countries and nearly twenty Indian states bring a kaleidoscope of techniques, materials, and stories with them. Visitors drift through more than 200 craft hubs, discovering everything from Kerala's signature handlooms and coconut-shell jewellery to ceramics, textiles, metalwork, and design traditions from across the world.
