Bring on the binge

The coming year promises no shortage of epic genre shows.

The Last of Us kicks off the year for epic genre television and there is plenty more where it came from flowing down various streaming-platform pipelines. The starting dates for most of these shows are still up in the air – and a few may not arrive until 2024 – but here’s a look at what’s on the horizon.

NEW SHOWS 

THE THREE-BODY PROBLEM

The first result from Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and DB Weiss signing a massive production deal with Netfl ix is this sci-fi epic based on the first of Chinese novelist Liu Cixin’s Remembrance of Earth’s Past trilogy. The book told the story of an astrophysicist who helps aliens invade Earth. (Netflix) 

MASTERS OF THE AIR

Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks are among the producers for this series that follows their earlier World War II series Band of Brothers and The Pacific. It’s a drama about UK-based United States Army Air Force crews during the bombing campaign against Nazi Germany. Among the cast is Elvis himself, Austin Butler. (AppleTV+) 

SECRET INVASION

 Due early in the year is the first of five live-action 2023 Marvel shows. It is focused on Samuel L Jackson’s SHIELD agent Nick Fury and based on a comic-book line involving  shape-shifting Skrulls invading Earth. Also starring will be newcomers Olivia Colman and Emilia Clarke. The other Marvel offerings due this year include a second season of Loki and WandaVision
