The world of Indian fashion, where bridal couture has reigned supreme, things are taking a quiet turn for the good.

Names once exclusively associated with bridal glam and red carpet glamour- Rahul Mishra, Anamika Khanna and Sabyasachi- are exploring the world of ready-to-wear, or prêt lines. These names were once associated with one-of-a-kind, made-to-order, opulent lehengas and gowns.

Today, that narrative is being quietly rewritten. A new chapter is emerging—one shaped not by excess, but by intention; not by occasion alone, but by everyday life. Enter ready-to-wear, or prêt. These very designers and others, are now turning to bring in pieces with sleek designs and subtle detailing.

A dynamic, growing market

The Indian luxury market is growing - according to a 2024 report by Bain & Company, it is projected to reach USD 200 billion by 2030. Included in this is the premium and luxury ready-to-wear garments section, which is expected to grow at a CAGR of 14 per cent.

Sabyasachi Mukherjee, long regarded as the authority on Indian bridal wear, launched an eponymous international clothing line in 2022. The collection includes elevated essentials like silk shirts, pants with a nod to Indian heritage, jackets, co-ords and more. Designer Rahul Mishra, known for his ingenuity, in 2023, launched his prêt line AFEW in collaboration with Reliance Brands.
