When one speaks of a European vacation, one’s mind traverses countries like Switzerland, France, Germany, Austria and Italy. Yet their near neighbour, Spain, while often an afterthought on the itinerary, is a veritable deep dive into a world that is steeped in rich history, variegated culture, lip-smacking cuisine, fine architecture and altogether unforgettable experiences.

Begin your journey in Madrid, the capital city. The best way to experience Madrid is the good old way, on foot. Tramping through its streets, especially the old Habsburg area, is an education, as Madrid is one city that has successfully sustained its classical beauty and historic architecture alongside its evolution into a modern metropolis. Look out especially for the castle-like buildings with Juliet balconies and crenelated terraces that adorn the streets. Don't miss the Royal Palace and Armory, with its baroque style and historic weaponry, or the Buen Retiro Park, a green oasis that's been around for centuries.

If you are into art, Madrid will delight you, being home to some of the best art ever created in Europe. The Prado Museum is the place to visit, to feast your eyes on works by the Spanish greats like Goya and Velázquez.

Speaking of feasting, if you are a foodie, you won’t find a more toothsome destination than Madrid. Spanish food is unique, with many regional specialities, and more amenable to the spice pampered Indian palate. So, when in Madrid, turn a deliberate blind eye to the calorie counter and tuck into such wonders as Paella Valencia, Potato Bravas, Gazpacho, Tortilla and Chives, to your heart’s content. The Taberna La Carmencita is especially recommended for food like the locals make it.
