Return of the Little Nyonyas
Tatler Singapore
|August 2025
Nearly two decades after the Singapore period drama series The Little Nyonya became a breakout hit, its spin-off, Emerald Hill – The Little Nyonya Story, ushers in a bold new era. Rising stars Chantalle Ng, Tasha Low and Ferlyn Wong take centre stage, reviving Peranakan culture with fresh energy, emotional grit and global appeal
The rhythmic clatter of wooden clogs, the gentle swish of silk kebayas and the sweet aroma of pandan drifting from traditional kitchens—The Little Nyonya conjured this evocative world when it first broadcast on free-to-air television in 2008. More than just a popular TV series, the blockbuster MediaCorp drama became a cultural phenomenon with its intimate look into Peranakan life rooted in tradition, resilience and quiet grace. Its story unfolded not through grand gestures, but in memories carefully stitched into every scene.
Today, nearly two decades later, its legacy lives on with a 30-part spin-off series: Emerald Hill – The Little Nyonya Story, or simply Emerald Hill. The loose sequel to the earlier hit picks up the cultural baton with a fresh narrative set in the 1950s to ’70s, diving into the emotional complexities and cultural inheritance of the wealthy Zhangs, a Peranakan Chinese family living in Singapore’s Emerald Hill.
Capturing the richness of Singaporean heritage while resonating with audiences both at home and abroad is no easy feat, yet Emerald Hill accomplishes it with remarkable ease. The release of its first three episodes on Netflix in Southeast Asia in early March saw the series quickly climb to the top of the platform’s most-watched list in both Singapore and Malaysia. It also launched on MediaCorp’s subscription service meWatch Prime at the same time, followed by a wider release on meWatch a week later, before airing on the broadcaster’s Channel 8 in the prime 9pm weekday slot.
Since its premiere, the period drama has earned praise for its lush cinematography, layered performances and sensitive portrayal of Peranakan culture. But beyond critical acclaim,
