Ozempic offers quick weight loss, but its long-term side effects may overshadow the initial thrill, revealing visible consequences that demand careful consideration before use

Ozempic’s Facial Transformation Trap

As it turns out, the explosive rise of Ozempic, a brand name for GLP-1 (Glucagon-Like Peptide-1) drugs, wasn’t a fleeting moment, a celebrity-driven trend. What began as a medication to regulate blood sugar by enhancing insulin secretion and slowing digestion has now transcended its original purpose. Its popularity hinges on noticeable results, with users reporting substantial weight reduction without changing their lifestyle. Initially, celebrities like Elon Musk, Sharon Osbourne, and Amy Schumer popularised its usage. Its use has since spread to the general public, with a 2024 survey showing 6 per cent of US adults—about 15.5 million people—have taken it. In India, while exact figures are unavailable, dieticians report growing demand for the drug among those struggling with weight issues. “Ozempic is approved mainly to treat type 2 Diabetes in India, but sometimes it's also prescribed for morbid obesity and its related complications,” says Dr Atul Parashar, a specialist in plastic and reconstructive surgery.

Yet, as with any shortcut to a slimmer silhouette, Ozempic comes with a catch—side effects that range from pesky to profound, raising questions about the true cost of its magic. Ozempic's most frequent side effects hit the gut hard. Nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, and constipation are par for the course, especially in the early weeks as the body adjusts. Clinical trials report that 30-40per cent of users experience gastrointestinal woes, with about 10per cent quitting due to intolerance. While common side effects like nausea and vomiting might get better with time, more complex and visible consequences may overshadow the joy of shedding pounds.
