This was thanks to the introduction of NBN Co's Accelerate Great program, which involved significantly increasing the wholesale download and upload speeds of the three highest NBN speed tiers to internet providers at no extra cost.

Ostensibly, NBN Co's trigger for Accelerate Great has been the change in our internet consumption needs. Over the past decade, the proliferation of streaming services, such as Stan and Netflix, combined with the average number of internet-connected devices jumping from three to 25, is seeing households use eight times more data than in 2015, with people now averaging more than six and a half hours a day online.
