Deciding which tools and equipment you should have in your armoury can be a challenge. Inspired by our DIY skills feature on page 86, we've drilled down into what's worthy of a place in your toolkit, whether you're a complete beginner or a more experienced DIYer. From hardworking multitools to high-tech levelling devices, read on for our guide to some of the best types of tools to invest in, plus some great buys to suit all budgets.

Mitre saw

Designed to make precise cuts at various angles in wood and other materials, a mitre saw is an investment that will save time and effort when tackling jobs like fitting skirting boards. The blade is fixed into your chosen position and then pulled down onto the material, giving you plenty of control. A single bevel model will be sufficient for most beginners - this means it can make mitre and bevel cuts in one direction. Expect to pay from around £75. This powerful machine will make smooth, clean cuts through wood, ideal for all sorts of home improvement projects. It also features a builtin dust extraction system.

Work bench

Although it's tempting to use a worktop or dining table for DIY tasks, investing in a work bench will avoid any damage, and make the job much safer. You can pick up a basic bench for around £50. Most have a folding mechanism for easy storage, and adjustable clamps to secure materials to the bench. Look for nonslip feet too, for maximum grip and stability. This folding design has a steel frame with rubber feet, a bamboo top, and boasts two different working heights.
