GARDEN ROOM

Communal eating is at the heart of this infill extension at the rear of a Victorian property in London by nimtim architects. Rather than a dedicated dining room, the new addition provides a space through which the table can thread and shift, echoing a street party style of eating - it can even spill directly into the garden thanks to a smooth flooring transition between indoors and out. The new build sits against the existing structure, the original brickwork exposed, and that lends the project its gentle, light-touch approach.

CURVE APPEAL

A simple side extension appears all the more elegant with a curved edge, as shown in this Sunnyhill Road project by 4S Architecture. The form is inspired by mid-century modern design, created to form a backdrop for the clients’ furniture pieces inside while sitting comfortably with the original Victorian property. And happily, the shape of the build was achieved without any need for cutting or costly special orders - the studio used slim tiles and standard bricks stacked vertically to create the curve.
