HOW MUCH listic DOES A NEW STAIRCASE COST?

Staircases are a necessary but often under-appreciated aspect of a home’s architecture, performing both a functional and decorative role. Whether you're renovating an existing staircase or installing a staircase as part of a self-build or renovation, the cost can range widely based on materials, design and complexity.

For a standard straight-run wooden staircase, you can expect to pay between £800 and £1,500. If you need something more bespoke (curved, helical or a floating staircase with premium materials such as glass, steel or solid oak), costs can start at around £5,000, with high-end, architect-designed staircases costing upwards of £20,000.

Additional factors that will affect the price are balustrade alternatives, handrails and challenges in installation. Below, we'll detail the most significant cost factors to help you budget accordingly for your own specific staircase project.

WHAT CAN INFLUENCE THE COSTS?

Several factors can have an impact on the cost of a new staircase, including the following:

Removal of the old staircase

If there is an existing staircase to be removed and replaced, the cost of removal and disposal of the stairs could range from £300 to £1,000, depending on the complexity and waste removal requirements.

New build vs renovation

For new builds, staircases can be incorporated into the design early on, so that installation is simpler. Renovations, on the other hand, are often designed around existing structures and can require additional labour, adaptations and also structural alterations.

Design and complexity

The simplest and most cost-effective staircase to have is a straight one. L-shaped, U-shaped, helical or floating staircases requiring additional materials, labour and installation expertise, will cost significantly more.
