HOMES FOR HOW WE LIVE NOW

Our homes are constantly evolving — we alter floor plans to open up spaces or enclose new rooms; pantries are converted to back kitchens, snug's to home offices, en-suite bathrooms to dressing rooms. So what do our homes say about our tastes and priorities? We asked the experts

HOMES FOR HOW WE LIVE NOW

1 HARDWORKING HALLS

‘Entrance layouts with plenty of storage are becoming increasingly popular, especially for those who either don’t have space for a separate boot room or want to create a secondary, more informal and functional zone alongside one,’ says Claire Garner, director at Claire Garner Design Studio. ‘It offers the charm and practicality of a traditional boot room but in a more compact footprint that suits modern family living. Integrated bench seating is a must for ease when putting on boots, and underneath you'll often find open cubbies or baskets for shoes. Hooks above allow for quick-grab outerwear, and upper shelving or closed cabinetry is ideal for hiding seasonal items or less frequently used accessories.’

image2 SHARED SPACES

‘We've seen clients increasingly prioritising the creation of multifunctional family rooms,’ says Emma Deterding, founder and creative director, Kelling Designs. ‘These spaces are no longer just about the design; they're about connection, comfort and versatility. Our clients are seeking thoughtfully curated rooms where they can come together with the family to watch films and TV, play games and simply be present with one another. These requests go beyond an eye-catching design; instead, the theme is for spaces that foster togetherness and adapt to the rhythm of modern family life. It’s about layering in cosy textures, bringing in smart storage solutions and creating flexible seating arrangements that support both relaxation and interaction at the same time.’
