In January 2025, a group of designers was challenged to create or modify a design for iolite that would show off the gem's pleochroism and that would work for the material's lower refractive index and minimal dispersion. Jeffrey Hill's “Mosaic” is a straightforward design where rough can be oriented to showcase the greys and blues or oriented to show a mixing of the colors.
