Why Does It Keep Happening?
-

Understanding the causes, risk factors, and available treatments can help in managing this challenging condition.
Recurrent miscarriages, defined as the loss of two or more consecutive pregnancies before 20 weeks of gestation, affect about 1-2% of couples trying to conceive. Experiencing multiple miscarriages can be emotionally devastating, leaving many couples searching for answers and hope.
What Causes Recurrent Miscarriages?
While some miscarriages occur due to random chromosomal abnormalities, recurrent pregnancy losses often have underlying causes, including:
1. Genetic Factors
- Parental Chromosomal Abnormalities: In about 2-5% of cases, one parent carries a balanced translocation, increasing the risk of abnormal embryos.
- Embryonic Chromosomal Defects: Most early miscarriages (up to 60%) are due to random genetic errors in the embryo.
2. Anatomical Abnormalities
- Uterine Issues: Conditions like a septate uterus (a wall dividing the uterus), fibroids, or scar tissue (Asherman’s syndrome) can interfere with implantation.
- Cervical Insufficiency: A weak cervix may open prematurely, leading to second-trimester losses.
3. Hormonal and Metabolic Disorders
- Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS): Linked to hormonal imbalances affecting ovulation and implantation.
- Thyroid Dysfunction: Both hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism can increase miscarriage risk.
