Delhi DC launches crackdown on illegal sale of MTP kits

IN a significant suo motu action aimed at protecting women's health and curbing the unlaw- ful sale of abortion-inducing medicines, the Delhi drug con- trol department has carried out a major crackdown on the illegal sale of medical termination of pregnancy (MTP) kits across the national capital.

According to Dr.KR Chawla, the drug controller of Delhi, the three-day inspection drive, conducted from September 5 to 7, covered multiple locations known for high footfall near hospitals and nursing homes.

The operation targeted chemist outlets suspected of selling MTP kits without valid prescriptions, in violation of the Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act, 1971, and the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940. Acting on its own accord and without waiting for public complaints, the Department deployed decoy customers to test the compliance of chemists with prescription laws, leading to the inspection of 157 medical shops across Delhi.
