THIS IS ACTUALLY the easiest way to feel amazing

You know that feeling when you step into a steamy shower and the hot water rains down your back? Or when you slow down to savor the last lick of ice cream? Or when you finally get home after a jam-packed day and take a few seconds to scratch your cat's fluffy chin? Those are all small moments of mindfulness.

You've probably heard a lot about mindfulness, and for good reason: Studies show this practice can reduce anxiety, improve sleep and help you cope with everyday stress.

And the techniques are super simple—you can practice them anywhere. Ready to invite more calm and care into your life? We thought so.

THE BIG PICTURE

As psychotherapist Gina Biegel, creator of Stressed Teens, explains, “Mindfulness is about becoming more deeply aware of the moment as it is unfolding. It’s noticing your senses, thoughts, feelings and physical sensations.”

Mindfulness helps you stay present, tune into your emotions and stay focused, shares Biegel. “I use it to stay present and stop my thoughts from drifting in class when I’m supposed to be paying attention,” says Ariana K., 17.

Noticing when you've zoned out and gently bringing yourself back is the first step. But mindfulness isn’t just about paying attention—it’s about choosing where to place your focus.

Think of the lens on your phone's camera: You can focus on tiny details or pull back to see the full landscape. “It’s hard to see things from a different perspective if your attention, focus and awareness are always zoomed in on yourself,” notes Biegel.

Dear Carol

FRIEND OR MORE? There's a guy in my homeroom class who I met this year. We get along really well—we make each other laugh and understand each other. Our fall dance is coming up, and I know we'll both be there. I want to ask him if he'd go with me, but just as a friend, so he'll know I'm not trying to get serious.
