The Portuguese isles of Madeira and the Azores are on the itinerary in the action-packed second leg of Martin Clunes' Islands of the Atlantic. On Madeira, Martin enjoys a stunning flower festival in the capital Funchal, and learns about the 'levadas' that allow water to be brought down from the mountains to irrigate crops.

'I was fascinated by the north, which is rocky and hard to get around,' says Martin. 'But they've created this infrastructure of levadas – sadly built by slaves – which is still productive.'
