Russell Crowe delivers a mesmerising and commanding performance as Hermann Göring, the fanatical Nazi leader who became Hitler's second-in-command during World War Two and was put on trial by the Allies at Nuremberg in 1946.

The actor captures the Reichsmarschall's arrogance and self-importance with unnerving precision. What the film does particularly well, however, is show how the architects of the Nazi terror were, beneath the uniforms and rhetoric, disturbingly ordinary men. Their evil thrived because it was underestimated, ignored o
