Haunted history

It’s a family affair for Denzel Washington when the Hollywood star brings August Wilson’s 1987 Pulitzer Prize-winning play, The Piano Lesson, to our screens this week.

Produced by the two-time Oscar-winner, the Netflix film also sees his youngest son, Malcolm Washington, take the helm as director, while his eldest son, John David Washington, has a starring role.

Set in Pittsburgh in 1936, amid the Great Depression, the story follows the fallout within the Charles family – led by Doaker (Samuel L. Jackson) – as they grapple over the fate of an heirloom piano that’s decorated with carvings of their enslaved ancestors.
