It's been nearly one year since Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck privately separated on April 26, 2024, around the same time that fans began to notice they seemed to be spending time apart.

And in the months after Lopez, 55, filed for divorce last August, citing "irreconcilable differences"-while also revealing the April separation date-one question loomed large: How did the marriage of Hollywood's most famous on-and-off couple, who wed in 2022 nearly two decades after they ended their first engagement, fall apart?

The answer isn't easily summed up. Though the stars put their relationship on display in the documentary The Greatest Love Story Never Told, released just two months before they separated, they both remained tight-lipped in the wake of the split. But Affleck, 52, broke his silence in a revealing interview for the cover of GQ's April issue. Saying he has “nothing but respect” for Lopez, the two-time Oscar winner reflected on their divorce, explaining he didn't want to share too much with the magazine because “it feels vulnerable.” Acknowledging that he's more “reserved and private” than Lopez, he added, “There's a tendency to look at breakups and want to identify root causes or something. But honestly... there's no scandal, no soap opera, no intrigue.... It's just a story about people trying to figure out their lives.”
