AS THEY CAMPAIGNED FOR WORLD PEACE, THE COUPLE WERE FIGHTING TO REUNITE THEIR FAMILY AFTER ONO'S CHILD WAS KIDNAPPED BY HER EX. A POWERFUL NEW DOCUMENTARY EXPLORES THE STORY BEHIND THE SEARCH FOR KYOKO

- By JORDAN RUNTAGH

JOHN LENNON & YOKO ONO'S HEARTBREAK the Lost Daugh

In August 1971 John Lennon and Yoko Ono left their home in England to begin anew chapter in New York City. Settling in the West Village, they fell in with a colorful crowd of radical activists. The flurry of peace marches, TV appearances and charity concerts that followed obscured the real reason for their move: They were desperately searching for Kyoko Cox, Ono's missing 8-year-old daughter. Kyoko was Ono's only child from her previous marriage, to American artist Anthony Cox. After losing a bitter custody battle, Cox violated a court order and fled with the girl. Lennon and Ono had spent the better part of a year waging legal battles and trailing them across multiple continents. When reports surfaced that Cox and Kyoko were hiding in the U.S., the couple relocated to continue the search.
