Lottie Moggach discusses Mrs Pearcey, her take on a Victorian murder
-
Your novel is inspired by a real crime. Can you tell us more?
In October 1890, Mary Pearcey invited her lover's wife to tea at her home in Camden Town. There she killed the woman and her infant, and wheeled both bodies through the dark north London streets in the baby's pram before dumping them. The murders caused a sensation: 30,000 people reportedly visited on the opening day of Madame Tussauds' tableau of the crime scene.
Is your protagonist, Hannah Teale, rooted in real history?
