ATTACK ON THE TIRPITZ MEDAL

Three X-class midget submarines - X5, X6 and X7 - cut through the icy waters of Altafjord, Norway, in September 1943. Engine Room Artificer Fourth Class Edmund 'Eddie' Goddard sat at the helm of X6, named Piker II. The 50ft (15m) craft was transporting Goddard, three other crew members and two 2,200lb (1,000kg) amatol charges to the Tirpitz, Germany's largest battleship. Tirpitz crew members spotted all three vessels, sinking X5 with a well-aimed 4.1in (105mm) shell. Yet both X6 and X7 succeeded in placing their demolition charges under the ship before their crews were captured.
