There were just 15 minutes left of the Taylor Swift-themed holiday dance class, where 26 little girls were making friendship bracelets, waiting for their parents to pick them up. But horror was just around the corner in the UK town of Southport as 17-year-old Axel Rudakubana approached the event with a 20cm-long kitchen knife.

What followed shocked the world and left the families it touched in shreds. In what a judge described as a “ferocious” and “sadistic” rampage, Rudakubana murdered three girls – Bebe King, 6, Elsie Dot Stancombe, 7, and Alice da Silva Aguiar, 9 – as well as trying to kill eight others. Some of the adults who tried to save them. Some would describe the teenager’s actions as “evil”, Judge Mr Justice Julian Goose said, adding: “On any view it was the most extreme, shocking and serious crime.”
