It opens with Franklin, once an aspiring composer, now a Hollywood power broker, realizing he's hit rock bottom — at his own A-list party. His second divorce is imminent, and he misses his best friends, Mary, now an alcoholic theater critic who still pines for him, and Charley, his former writing partner, now a Pulitzer Prizewinning playwright. The musical traces their friendship back to its beginning when they were neighbors trying to make it in New York.

The film was recorded over three performances of the show's Tony-winning revival in June 2024, but the film version gives you the best seat in the house.

Atkinson is in his element as a school caretaker who gets stuck caring for the "Baby Jesus" from the Christmas pageant when the infant is left behind.
