A BREAKTHROUGH new material developed by a Cornell University researcher could significantly improve the delivery and effectiveness of mRNA vaccines — used to fight COVID-19 — and be a potent weapon against cancer in the future.

MRNA vaccines train cells to produce proteins that kill invading viruses. The vaccine is packaged inside fatty spheres called lipid nanoparticles that protect the compound from being degraded. But one common ingredient of the lipid nanoparticles called poly-ethylene glycol — PEG — can provoke an immune response in a small number of people.
