Lonely woodpecker terrorizes town

A PERSISTENT pileated woodpecker — the kind the famous cartoon character Woody Woodpecker is based on — is waging war on a small seaside Massachusetts town, where the tap-happy terror has damaged about two dozen vehicles.

And experts on the red-mohawked birdbrain say it might be because he's in a romantic mood!

At first, it was a mystery why all those cars ended up with giant gouges and with windshields and side mirrors cracked and smashed, but a resident finally snapped a pic of the fowl culprit.
