Pedro Pascal reflects on his recent roles as father figures, how his dad inspired his love of film and why he owes everything to his beloved mum

Pedro Pascal has always been adamant that having children is not for him. "I'm not a daddy - and I'm not going to be a daddy," he has said.

Yet the actor's roles as Joel in post-apocalyptic drama The Last of Us and as Din Djarin (or "Mando") in The Mandalorian have proved that he isn't afraid to portray a father figure on screen.

"I really didn't [anticipate it]. As different and in some way similar - as Mando and Joel are, only now do I see the comparison," says Pedro, who celebrates his 50th birthday this week.

"I don't have kids of my own, so maybe this is me working something out."

The Chilean-born American star has never been afraid of a challenge. After honing his craft in smaller TV roles, Pedro had his breakout moment aged 39 as Oberyn Martell in series four of fantasy series Game of Thrones.

He has since starred alongside Matt Damon in fantasy film The Great Wall and with Ben Affleck in action-adventure movie Triple Frontier.
