The 61-year-old native of Japan, who became one of NASCAR's most beloved racing team owners after retiring from competition in 2005, was driving on Highway 73 in Huntersville, N.C., on April 5 when his Toyota crossed a center line and struck an oncoming SUV. The collision killed Hattori instantly, but investigators determined he wasn't speeding and wasn't impaired.

His shocking death has rocked the tight-knit NASCAR community.
