Out-of-date drugs become less effective - or even dangerous

Expired medicines can be less effective or even risky, due to a change in chemical composition or a decrease in strength, pharmacists say.

Prescription drugs, especially for serious diseases and conditions, should never be used past their expiration date. These include insulin, EpiPens, inhalers, nitroglycerine tablets, seizure and thyroid meds and blood thinners - aka anti-coagulants.
