WHAT IS A FRAGMENT?

On a grammar worksheet, a sentence needs two key things: a subject and a verb that shows action or state of being. Remove one of those, and you have a fragment.

• On the kitchen table

• Racing through the alley

• A very bad idea

Each example hints at a full picture yet stops just shy of a full sentence. Fragments cause readers to lean in.

Now read the fragment version: Footsteps behind her. Closer. Lucy quickened her pace.
