It includes rehabilitating land once mining is complete, reducing emissions and waste and ensuring that the benefits of mining are shared fairly across communities.

In a session on Advancing the Sustainable Development Framework, Rohit Kumar, secretary-general of Carbon Markets Association of India (CMAI), underlined an overlooked challenge in the sector: methane. “The mining sector contributes not just to carbon emissions but to methane emissions as well. It is a major concern,” he said.
