Used Cooking Oil: From Waste to Wealth

How Indian hospitality industry is switching to biofuel...
In the face of climate change and rising energy costs, India's hospitality sector is undergoing a quiet but powerful transformation. From five-star hotels in Mumbai to heritage resorts in Rajasthan, an increasing number of businesses are swapping conventional fossil fuels for cleaner, greener alternatives - biofuels. This shift, driven by environmental responsibility, regulatory nudges, and economic practicality, is setting a precedent for sustainable energy use in commercial establishments.
Why the Shift?
The hospitality industry has traditionally relied heavily on fossil fuels - especially diesel - for heating water, operating boilers, and powering kitchen burners. While efficient, these fuels contribute significantly to carbon emissions and pose long-term environmental and health risks.
Biofuels, derived from organic sources such as used cooking oil (UCO), agricultural residues, and animal fats, offer a renewable, lower-emission alternative. Biodiesel, for instance, emits up to 80% fewer greenhouse gases compared to petroleum diesel. As sustainability takes center stage in corporate strategies, biofuels are gaining traction as a feasible and future-forward choice for energy consumption.
Used Cooking Oil: From Waste to Wealth
One of the most promising developments in India's biofuel story is the valorization of used cooking oil. The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) estimates that over 2,700 million liters of UCO are generated annually, most of which is either illegally reused or improperly discarded, causing environmental and health hazards.
In recent years, the government and private players have incentivized the collection of UCO for conversion into biodiesel. For the hospitality sector—particularly hotels and restaurants that generate high volumes of UCO—this provides a double benefit: waste disposal and green energy generation.
