ARTIFICIAL PANCREAS: THE FUTURE OF DIABETES TECHNOLOGY
Healthcare Radius
|April 2025
With evolving technology in the medical sector, several advancements are expected to make artificial pancreas systems even more effective.
Diabetes is a chronic health condition that requires constant monitoring and adjustment. It is characterized by the failure of insulin to control blood sugar levels. It has two main types, i.e., type 1 and type 2. People with diabetes must carefully track blood sugar levels, calculate insulin doses, and accordingly make lifestyle choices. Even with the best efforts, there can be unexpected fluctuations, making diabetes management a challenging process.
With advancements in the medical sector, the artificial pancreas has emerged as a promising technology that automates insulin delivery based on real-time glucose levels. This offers a way to maintain more stable blood sugar control without needing manual adjustments. It is a significant leap in diabetes management, giving patients more freedom and minimizing the risks associated with blood sugar fluctuations.
HOW ARTIFICIAL PANCREAS WORKThe artificial pancreas is a closed-loop system which tracks glucose levels continuously and delivers the appropriate amount of insulin. It consists of three main components. A Continuous Glucose Monitor, or CGM, is a small sensor placed under the skin that measures glucose levels throughout the day and night. The real-time data is sent to a control system which allows immediate adjustments.
Then an Insulin Infusion Pump delivers insulin through a small tube (Catheter) which has a needle inserted under the skin. It stays in the same place for several days. This replaces the need for multiple daily injections and ensures the availability of insulin when needed.
