Essential service infrastructure is only as valuable as the benefits it provides to people, which is why accurately measuring its true impact after completion is critical for ensuring developments hit the mark and that developers continue to improve.

A Simple Framework To Measure The Impact And Success Of Infrastructure Projects

It's often difficult for contractors and clients to measure a project's success upon its completion.

"Hitting every project target is critical, but making sure the project makes the desired impact is even more valuable. While every precaution must be taken during planning and construction to deliver the highest quality, most durable structures possible, the only true measure of a project's capabilities is in how people utilize it," explains Olebogeng Manhe, Chairman and Co-founder of GIC.

"As such, post-analyses are crucial to determining whether what we deliver is of actual value and meets the needs of both the client and, more importantly, the communities we ultimately serve. It further identifies any potential future issues that the system may experience, what the long-term maintenance requirements will be, and what additions should still be made to ensure the structure's longevity."

He explains that post-project analyses are systematic and comprehensive assessments of the project's performance, outcomes, and impact after its completion. Depending on the scope and evaluation, these assessments can be conducted at different levels and stages.

For example, some analyses may focus on the technical aspects of the project, such as the design, construction, operation, and maintenance of the infrastructure. Others may focus on the economic, social, environmental, or institutional aspects of the project, such as the cost-benefit ratio, stakeholder satisfaction, environmental impact, or governance and accountability.

Approaches To Evaluating Success

There is no one-size-fits-all method for measuring the impact and success of infrastructure projects.
